On our recent trip to Utah we listened to and finished a couple of audio books. The first was a fun one called "The Beloved Dearly". It was about a clever boy who was always coming up with ways to earn money. Unfortunately his father didn't like his schemes and forbade him from continuing. The boy decided to make one last attempt and builds a business burying neighborhood kids' dead pets. In the process he builds a pet cemetery, learns how to make and keep friends and earns his dad's understanding. Most of us enjoyed the story.
The other story was a little more thought provoking--"Bread and Roses, too". It is a story about the 1912 factory strike in Massachusetts. It made me think about factory conditions and wondered if strikes could really change them. I questioned the government involvement and the unions. I felt sorry for the families, especially the children. And I felt grateful that we don't live in that kinds of environment. Mostly Jonathan and I listened to that one, but the kids quietly played or read or listened.
